I think as many of us know, there are many rumours going around outside, especially in Kuching as there are some dark deeds and secrets which revolves around SAMS. As a senior committee, I wish to put up a clarification as it has quite tainted our image in Kuching, what to mention on the interwebs.
First and foremost, SAMS is a non-profit club, with our goal of exposing and educating the many members of the public about the popular culture of animes and cosplay from the Land of the Raising Sun to the Kuching population. I can proudly say we were the first to have a cosplay parade in the whole of Kuching as we really went all out on it, even to the part of overspending our budget, and members digging their own wallets (or purse) to make it successful, though it was tiring. And does most of Kuching people ever get to see PVC figurines and those resin kits on display, up-close and personal? Well, unless you do travel to either Sabah or West Malaysia, there is non here in Kuching (aside from those niche toy shops which just sprang out not long ago), we had the chance to expose people to these stuff at Toy Fair which was organised by WonderToys. I hope the Kuchingnities did enjoy it.
Anyway, due to recent event (CosVention anyone?), there was a serious debate about it, as well as rumours on it. First and foremost, Carol and Ian being one of the panel judge. They were appointed by the organizer, who can argue with that? Besides, even if Ian is still part of SAMS, he was representing I’ve Anime and so was Carol as she had to replace Ian due to unseen circumstances.
Next on, about the winner. As many know, “SAMS” won the first prize in the competition, but truth to be told, they were never representing SAMS to begin with, and SAMS is not inside the working committee of CosVention. We were invited by CosVention to have our display booth there. Given the opportunity, we went as it fits into our goal of exposing and creating awareness to members of the public, and we are happy and surprise, many people came and enquire about the stuff which were on display.
Next, about cosplay. Cosplay well, is generally known as donning a costume and replicating anime, manga or game characters, which is true. Lolita fashion is a sub-culture, hence should not be included. I will not say much here as the cosplay term is still quite loosely based. Even there are characters who are lolitas (Rosen Maiden) but is part of cosplay, depending on the situation and I guess much, the animes or manga which they originate from. I do agree that the so-called “SAMS” group wasn’t suppose to win as they did not have a full cosplay team, or depicting the scene in the manga or anime. I will not side with anyone as I have a neutral decision on this. You make your call.
I think thats that. We never gotten funds from any of the activities we have done, including the charity activities organized by the KAA (Kuching Autism Association, formerly SAA). Their photography charges were collected by them. All we gain was the fun and the exposure to others as well as making more friends.
Wow, this is my longest post so far. Please don’t even try to quote me on anything I have said as I am just clarifying the mess which have happened. Say what you want, I wouldn’t even care (maybe a little :Þ ). One has to move on in life. Hope that there will be no such problems in the future anymore. I hate conflicts, and so do many. What ever your view will be, I will not change it. Its up to one to accept it or not. Owh, and hope more cosplay events to come too! ^_^. See, we are progressing! First CosVention, then Kuching Open Cosplay. What’s next? Maybe Saberkas organising one? Or… Tun Jugah? Or Riverside Majestic? Or maybe the many hotels will also organise one!
I would first apologise if there is any misunderstanding of what I have said earlier. So, sorry from the deepest depth of my heart. Hope it was made as clear as a crystal.
Cheers.
